Bicycle Parking Ordinance Passes City Planning Commission

The Los Angeles City Planning Commission today took a step towards making Los Angeles a truly bicycle friendly city.  In a unanimous vote, the Commission adopted a Bicycle Parking Ordinance that would vastly expand the number of new bike parking spaces required in new developments of all kinds throughout Los Angeles. Over 15 dedicated bicyclists and advocates showed up in City Hall Room 350 today to support the ordinance.  Kudos are due to Rye Baerg, the driving force behind the ordinance in the City Planning Department, and all the dedicated members of the public who have helped the ordinance reach where it is today.

The next step for the Bicycle Parking Ordinance is a hearing before the PLUM (Planning & Land Use Management) Committee.  Once through PLUM, the ordinance goes to a full hearing before the City Council before becoming part of the City’s municipal code.  When the ordinance is agendized from the PLUM Committee, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Mark Your Calendars: Bicyclist Anti-Harassment Comes to Council July 20th

It’s finally here.  After years of work by City staff and dedicated members of the public, it’s here.  After months of council hearings and refining of legal language, it’s here.  Just over a week from today, the City of Los Angeles has the opportunity to enact a truly groundbreaking ordinance for protecting Bicyclists’ rights and safety.

A vote on the Bicyclist Anti-Harassment Ordinance is scheduled for the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, July 20th.  You can read the latest draft of the ordinance here. We’ll be attending the meeting next week, and will be live-tweeting the proceedings from @BikeBlogChris.

BPIT Notes, 7/5/11: Progress Marches Ever On

The most recent meeting of the Bike Plan Implementation Team (BPIT) assembled this past Tuesday at City Hall Room 721 to discuss a wide range of topics centered around a single goal: making Los Angeles a better place to ride a bike.  This BPIT meeting, while less contentious than in months past, accomplished a great deal and took the first steps on many projects that will end in miles of bike lanes, miles of bicycle boulevards, and safer bicyclists.

Below the fold, we’ll go through the details of this month’s meeting.  Presentations by Pat Hines of Safe Moves, updates on newly finished bike lanes by Paul Meshkin, a presentation on priority bike lane projects in central LA & NELA, and discussions about prioritizing Bicycle Friendly Streets were all covered.

New Website for the LADOT Bike Program Now Live

To commemorate the recently completed Bike Week LA, the LADOT Bike Program is excited to announce a re-design of our website.  The site is now live, so go take a look for yourself.  Along with our recently updated bike maps, and our continually updated maps of new bike infrastructure projects, the LADOT Bike Program is committed to getting ourselves 100% up-to-date.

Not to be confused with the LADOT Bike Blog, we’re instead talking about the LADOT Bike Program website, bicyclela.org.  What was once a comically retro, circa 2000 design scheme comes roaring into 2011 with a revamped layout and some brand new features.

Bicyclist’s Anti-Harassment Ordinance Clears T-Committee – Next Stop: City Council

Yesterday at 2:15 PM, the City Council’s Transportation  Committee met to discuss, among other things, a possible Bicyclist Anti-Harassment Ordinance.  The draft of the ordinance, released last month to great fanfare, was the result of a motion introduced by Council Member Bill Rosendahl.  The hearing yesterday at the Transportation Committee was the first hurdle on the draft ordinance’s path to becoming law.  It was fitting, then, that the selfsame Council Member Bill Rosendahl sat today as Chair of the Transportation Committee to hear the ordinance which he had introduced.

One step remains for the ordinance to become law

With a few adjustments, the draft ordinance cleared Transportation Committee and is now on it’s way to being agendized for the full City Council.  You can check out the play-by-play at the twitter hashtag #TComm. If adopted by City Council, the ordinance becomes law.

Two Can’t-Miss Meetings for LA’s Bike Community this Week

There was much hoopla last week over the adoption LA’s ambitious and visionary bike plan.  Now it’s time to take that momentum and use it towards getting work done today for the benefit of all LA’s bicyclists.  Two events this week should be of especial interest to the bicycle community: The BAC Planning Subcommittee meets Tuesday afternoon and the City Council Transportation Committee meets Wednesday to discuss the bicyclist Anti-Harassment Ordinance.

“A Bike Love-in”: Villaraigosa Commemorates Adoption of New LA Bike Plan

It was a festival atmosphere at City Hall this morning as bicyclists from all over the City pedaled in to celebrate a new era for Los Angeles. As we’re sure you’ve heard, the Draft LA Bike Plan is “draft” no longer; the Bike Plan came before City Council yesterday and was unanimously adopted into the City’s General Plan.  Today was the celebration.  Check out all our photos from today on flickr or our facebook page.

Bike Plan, BPIT, CicLAvia; Get Ready for March 1st

(Ed. Note: We’ve added another map to our Map Page – this one contains all of the BPIT “Top 10” projects in one place!)

On March 1st 1936, the Hoover Dam was completed on the Colorado River, becoming one of the largest public works ever built.  On March 1st 2011, the LA City Council will be asked to adopt the draft LA Bike Plan into the Transportation Element of the City’s General Plan.  No less momentous an occasion! … kinda.

The City Council convenes at 9:30 in the morning and a number of other bike-related meetings are scheduled afterward throughout the day. If you so desire, you could keep yourself busy all day Tuesday with various bike meetings.  We’ve already got our scheduled fully blocked out.

LA’s First Bike Corral Now Officially Open for Business

LADOT Bike Blog has spilled quite a bit of digital ink over the last week talking up LA’s first bike corral at Cafe de Leche in Highland Park. Today saw the grand opening of that bike corral, and LADOT Bike Blog was on hand to witness the joyous occasion.

Next Stop: City Council – LA Bike Plan passes joint PLUM/T-Committee

Wednesday afternoon saw the penultimate stage completed in the years-long journey to get a new bike plan adopted for the City of Los Angeles.  In a special joint session, both the PLUM (Planning and Land Use Management) and Transportation Committees met to discuss the draft LA Bike Plan.  As the two committees with input on the bike plan, they are the last step before the plan faces the full City Council for adoption into the City’s general plan.  The crowd on hand was much smaller than those who turned out for the Bike Plan at the City Planning Commission, but there was still ample representation from the LACBC, Bikeside and the BAC.

While there was a small measure of conflict among speakers and committee members (mostly centered around equestrian/mountain biking conflicts), the plan itself easily sailed through committee.  Below the fold, we’ll cover the highlights of the hearing.  If you want blow-by-blow coverage, you can always check out the twitter feed of LADOT Bike Blog’s author Christopher Kidd (@BikeBlogChris).  You can also check out the twitter hashtag #LABikePlan to see what the collective bike community had to say during the hearing.
