National Bike to School Day at Berendo Middle School

Schools across the country today are participating in National Bike to School Day. I got up a little early today to join Berendo Middle School students, staff and friends to participate in the fun.

Getting ready to bike to Berendo Middle School.

The event was organized by Children’s Hospital and included support and encouragement from LAPD bicycle officers, as well as the CHP. Helen Arbogast, from Children’s Hospital, sent a nice email summarizing the goals of the event, “Communities and schools are using Walk or Bike to School Day as the first step to change community culture and to create options for getting around that are more inviting for everyone, both young and old. Change is a gradual process and today’s event marks the beginning of these efforts… My many thanks to everyone who helped make today’s event a success. What a wonderful example of coordination and collaboration!”

The event precedes activities related to a Federal Safe Routes to School grant LADOT was awarded recently to implement traffic calming treatments along planned Bicycle Friendly Streets adjacent to the school. More on that to come!

Bicycling to school/work is a lot of fun. Many thanks to CHP for their support of the event.

This intersection is one of several that will see improvements as a result of SRTS funding.
