Bike to Work Day!

I got a bright and early start on Thursday morning to check out the festivities for Bike to Work Day.  Since I had spent the night in Glendale, my first stop out of the 39 Bike to Work Day pit-stops across the city was at The Bicycle Mart on Brand Blvd. in beautiful Glendale.

Downtown Bike Ride (updated)

Update: One of my awesome LADOT colleagues took some photos of the Downtown Bike Ride as well.  You can check them out here on the LADOT Bike Blog flickr page.

Yesterday morning, LADOT Bike Blog took part in the Dowtown Bicycle Ride.  Starting and ending at Olvera Plaza, the four mile loop went through many downtown districts.  Metro and LADOT staff were on hand for the ride as well as an escort from LAPD’s bicycle squad.  Young and old, fixies and fold-ups, spandex and suits were all in attendance. Blessing of the Bikes

They braved gloomy skies, misting rain, wet roads, and chilly conditions.  They were there to get their bikes blessed, and no amount of inclement weather was going to stop them.

At 8 AM this morning at the Good Samaritan Hospital, the Annual Blessing of the Bicycles took place to much fanfare and jubilation.  LADOT Bike Blog was there too.

Bike Week LA

On a beautiful, albeit cloudy, Monday morning, people began to gather at LAPD headquarters in front of the Ronald F. Deaton Civic Auditorium.  From 7 AM on, more and more bicycles began to appear while tables, tents, and video cameras were set up.  It was the long heralded kick-off for Bike Week LA, and LADOT Bike Blog was there to document it.

Bike to Work Week begins Monday

It’s almost here!  It’s almost here!  Bike to Work Week is almost here!

You can ride to work while looking dapper

Just a friendly reminder that Bike to Work Week starts this coming Monday.  LADOT Bikeways will be out in force along with a whole bunch of other bicycle organizations for the kick-off event Monday morning at 8 AM.  It will be in the plaza in front of the new LAPD headquarters downtown.  There will be informational booths and tables, lots of free stuff, and the city staff (and maybe even a council member or two) will be there on bikes to help get Bike to Work Week started right.  You can even meet the intrepid and foolhardy author of LADOT Bike Blog!  If that’s not incentive to come on down, I don’t know what is.

And for those of you getting pumped for free rides on DASH and Commuter Express, LADOT has a news release detailing all the specifics.

May is Bike to Work Month

(Ed. Note: Sorry for the lag in content the past two week.  I was in my final week of classes at USC, and the crunch for time really got in the way of things.  I look forward to getting LADOT Bike Blog back on track!)

Roll up that right pant leg and exchange your briefcase for a messenger bag: May is National Bike Month.  This will be Los Angeles’ 16th annual Bike to Work Month and Metro’s got all the details on Bike to Work Week, taking place from May 17th to May 21st.  Bike to Work Day itself will take place Thursday, May 20th.  Biketoworkweek.org is a great resource for finding out what other cities around the world will be doing, and you can find out what’s going on statewide here.

Bike Corrals motion passes City Council

On Tuesday, item #21 came before the City Council and was unanimously passed.  Hurray!  You can listen to the council meeting yourself right here (to digress for a moment, this website is a pretty cool tool.  On-demand agenda, videos, and audio files of every City Council meeting.  I highly recommend it.).  There was also some excellent coverage earlier in the week from LAist, LACBC, Bicycle Fixation, and Biking in LA.  LA is lucky to have so many dedicated sources of bicycle information and advocacy.

Coming soon to York Blvd.

Bike Corrals on City Council Schedule

Scheduled for tomorrow

The motion for a bike corral pilot project on York Blvd., covered here earlier this month, is scheduled to come before City Council tomorrow, Tuesday April 27th.  Carried over from last Friday’s council agenda, the bike corrals motion is scheduled as item number twenty one.  Here’s the PDF of the continuation agenda, and here’s all the items scheduled to come before it.  We’ll keep you updated on any progress.
