BPIT Notes 4/5/11: 7th Street, Venice Blvd, Sunset Blvd, and More

This last Tuesday, folks from LADOT, City Planning, the Mayor’s Office, Council Offices, LACBC, Bikeside, and other concerned bicyclists all piled into City Hall Room 721 for the monthly meeting of the Bike Plan Implementation Team.  If you missed it, you can get the meeting notice and agenda here.

It’s becoming more apparent with each meeting that City Hall Room 721 may not fulfill the needs of the ever-growing BPIT: the 37 people who showed up this month were practically flowing out into the hallway.  It’s encouraging to see that so many members of the public and so many representatives from various parts of the City are committed to making the LA Bike Plan a reality.  Rick Risemberg weighed in with a very uplifting recap of the BPIT at the Flying Pigeon blog.  Dan Rodman, an excellent new writer for Bikeside, gave his own recap of the meeting.

Up on the docket for the BPIT were updates on current LADOT Bikeways projects, progress on 7th Street, the Wilshire Grand project, Sunset Boulevard, getting started on Venice Boulevard, and future program priorities for the City.

Bike Maps Across the City: LADOT Delivers

As mentioned here and elsewhere, the LADOT Bike Program has recently completed a long-overdue update of our LA City Bike Maps.  As part of getting these maps out to the public, I get to mail out maps (free to you) and each coordinator gets to drops off boxes of new maps all over the City at bike shops and bike co-ops.  This approach makes plenty of sense: Members of the public who are most likely to want a bike map are also those members of the public most likely to visit bike shops and bike co-ops.

The coordinators have delivered so many maps, in fact, that we only have enough Valley Bike Maps left to mail out to people submitting map requests.  This past week, I rode along with coordinator Brendan Keeler and intern Derek Levoit, delivering bike maps across downtown and the westside.

March BPIT Meeting: 7th Street Bike Lanes and Beyond

Last Tuesday morning, bicyclists gathered at City Hall to watch the City Council adopt the LA Bike Plan into the City’s General Plan.  After a little celebrating and some quickly consumed lunch meals, some of those selfsame bicyclists sat down at City Hall to make sure the Bike Plan gets implemented.

In all, 30 people crowded in City Hall Room 721 on Tuesday afternoon for the second meeting of the Bike Plan Implementation Team.  (You can catch earlier coverage of the BPIT meeting at LACBCFlying Pigeon (twice), and Orange 20.) The lead topic for the 2nd BPIT meeting was the proposed bike lanes on 7th Street (don’t forget, we’re still looking for your input on how to build them!).  The group then discussed the process to build new projects and which projects will be on the docket for the next BPIT meeting.

“A Bike Love-in”: Villaraigosa Commemorates Adoption of New LA Bike Plan

It was a festival atmosphere at City Hall this morning as bicyclists from all over the City pedaled in to celebrate a new era for Los Angeles. As we’re sure you’ve heard, the Draft LA Bike Plan is “draft” no longer; the Bike Plan came before City Council yesterday and was unanimously adopted into the City’s General Plan.  Today was the celebration.  Check out all our photos from today on flickr or our facebook page.

LA’s First Bike Corral Now Officially Open for Business

LADOT Bike Blog has spilled quite a bit of digital ink over the last week talking up LA’s first bike corral at Cafe de Leche in Highland Park. Today saw the grand opening of that bike corral, and LADOT Bike Blog was on hand to witness the joyous occasion.

Busy Week: Bike Shops and Bike Corral Grand Openings

If you happen to be bicycle-inclined (and if you read this blog, we bet you are) there are quite a few things to celebrate this week in Los Angeles. A brand new, incredibly large, bike shop in downtown is having their grand opening on Wednesday. Two days later a brand new, incredibly awesome, bike corral is having its grand opening in Highland Park on Friday. Follow us below the fold for all the details.

Next Stop: City Council – LA Bike Plan passes joint PLUM/T-Committee

Wednesday afternoon saw the penultimate stage completed in the years-long journey to get a new bike plan adopted for the City of Los Angeles.  In a special joint session, both the PLUM (Planning and Land Use Management) and Transportation Committees met to discuss the draft LA Bike Plan.  As the two committees with input on the bike plan, they are the last step before the plan faces the full City Council for adoption into the City’s general plan.  The crowd on hand was much smaller than those who turned out for the Bike Plan at the City Planning Commission, but there was still ample representation from the LACBC, Bikeside and the BAC.

While there was a small measure of conflict among speakers and committee members (mostly centered around equestrian/mountain biking conflicts), the plan itself easily sailed through committee.  Below the fold, we’ll cover the highlights of the hearing.  If you want blow-by-blow coverage, you can always check out the twitter feed of LADOT Bike Blog’s author Christopher Kidd (@BikeBlogChris).  You can also check out the twitter hashtag #LABikePlan to see what the collective bike community had to say during the hearing.

There were three items heard before the joint committee.  The first was an action item (requiring a vote) and the last two were “receive and file” items (which don’t require a vote).

Make the Bike Plan Work for You: Attend the BPIT Meetings

First off, let’s cover the most important information:

  • The Bike Plan Implementation Team (BPIT) will meet on the first Tuesday of every month.  It is held at 2PM in City Hall, room 721 (in the City Planning Department’s offices)

Final Hurdles: PLUM/T-Committee Joint Hearing on the LA Draft Bike Plan set for 2/9/11

In a short aside prior to the meat of this post, I’d like to take the time to introduce myself. From now on, I will be posting under the handle of ladotbikeinternI. My name is Derek Levoit and I am a Planning grad student and frequent biker hailing from the vast plains of the Orange County suburbs. I’m looking forward to helping communicate about progress in bicycle issues and bringing in my perspectives on how to move forward together. This post is pretty short and I still have my training wheels (no pun intended), so please… be kind.

We here at the LADOT Bike Program wanted to make sure you all knew about the upcoming joint Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) and Transportation Committees hearing for the 2010 Draft LA Bike Plan. The hearing is to be held in City Council Chambers on Wednesday, February 9 starting at 2pm. Bike Lanes, Bike Paths & Sharrows: Notes from the BAC Bikeways Subcommitee, 1/25/11

Last Tuesday, 15 people met on the 9th floor of the Caltrans building downtown to discuss upcoming bike lanes, upcoming bike paths, and the future of Sharrows in Los Angeles.  They met to discuss the engineering realities of each project and how to best move them forward for the benefit of all bicyclist Angelinos.  The results of this meeting, and the one held earlier this month, will be reported back to the full Bicycle Advisory Committee when they next meet.  In case you forgot when the BAC meets:
