Busy Weekend: Park(ing) Day & cicLAvia Bicycle Beauty Pageant

It’s an event-filled weekend for bikes and LADOT Bike Blog.  Friday marks Park(ing) Day and Saturday will see a great fundraiser for cicLAvia.  Make sure you get in on the fun.

Make Park(ing) Day doubly green: ride your bike there!

Gussy up your bike and get it down to Atwater Village this Saturday night

Friday, September 17th will mark the 6th anniversary of Park(ing) Day and the 4th year that Los Angeles has participated in the worldwide event.  What began as a single parking space in San Francisco has now blossomed to cities around the globe.

Over 20 locations are participating in Park(ing) Day LA this year (you can check the map here).  LADOT Bike Blog will be attending Park(ing) Day at USC, where the Associated Student of Planning and Development will have their own Park(ing) space.  Other noteworthy bicycle advocates, like Damien Newton of Streetsblog, will also be participating in Park(ing) Day.  You should also check out the Streets for Feet event taking place on Hudson Avenue in Hollywood.  Sponsored by CRA/LA, CD 13 Council member Eric Garcetti and others, this event will close off Hudson Avenue for the entire weekend, seeking to build off of Park(ing) Day’s momentum.  You can find out even more at the Hollywood Community Studio blog.  We highly recommend that you check out multiple spaces, and there’s no better way to get to your local Park(ing) space than via bicycle.

cicLAvia – Bicycle Beauty Pageant

As a benefit fundraiser, an event to raise awareness, and an all-around good time, cicLAvia is hosting a bicycle beauty pageant at 8PM in Atwater Village on Saturday night.

cicLAvia, an event based on the world famous Ciclovias of Bogota, will close down seven and a half miles of LA’s streets on October 10, 2010. cicLAvia will open streets up for people to walk, ride, play, and live in spaces previously dedicated only to driving.  You can check out the cicLAvia route here on their blog.  LADOT is proud to work with the cicLAvia organizers to create a workable traffic plan to close down seven and a half miles of street to car traffic.

But getting back to the bike pageant, there will be live music, delicious food, and a movie screening.  Admission is free if you enter your bike in the pageant.  Doors open at 8, music starts at 9, and the pageant starts at 10.  All money raised at the event will go towards funding cicLAvia on 10/10/10.
