AB 1371 – Three-Foot Passing Bill – Moves Forward to Senate Floor

“Give Me 3,” will it become a law this time?

Although two recent  attempts at passing legislation that would require motorists safely leave at least three feet of space when overtaking bicyclists have failed due to unclear language, advocates of such a law have not given up. Back in February, Assemblymember Steven Bradford introduced AB 1371, the latest iteration of a three-foot passing bill. AB 1371 sailed through an Assembly vote in May and yesterday it passed with the Senate Standing Committee on Transportation and Housing10-0. Next up is a vote on the Senate Floor, if you would like to see the bill move forward, contact your local Senator and let them know you support AB 1371.

Let me know if I can do anything to help. We have to make this happen for California cyclists and your families. Bottom line: This law will serve as a great tool to educate motorists on how to safely pass a cyclist from the rear. More importantly, it will save lives. That alone is why the legislators need to make this happen…now get on the phone and let them know you expect their support of AB1371.

    Good luck.

Craig, thank you. It is all about saving lives. This law will save lives. It may be a friend’s life. A loved one’s life. Someone you don’t even know. Remind everyone you talk to, write to that this is the ultimate good served.

Craig, you know how hard it is to look into the eyes of family members who have just lost their dads, husbands, wives, moms…it’s horribly hard, and it’s 1000 times harder for them. We can’t eliminate this pain. Accidents will happen. But, we sure as hell can reduce the number of lives lost and injured by making sure Governor Brown signs the bill once it lands on his desk.

        Let’s make it happen Craig.
